Christmas Oz Style!

Hola my friends!!!

Wanted to post a taste of our little day out at the beach - Christmas Day!

What better way to spend Christmas, than wearing a Santa Hat to avoid getting your head burnt, with your friends, drinking bubbles by the beach?! Some people say you can't have a hot Christmas, but I disagree!!!

Thank you to all my new friends for a cool day out, spent chilling, drinking, and eating... A LOT. We managed to get through a load of sausages, some kangaroo steak (YUM!), and about half a kilo of prawns among other things. All of course cooked on the communal barbies by the beach (what a great idea!).

Our evening then took us over to another friend's house for a bit, before heading down Acland Street) the main street in St Kilda where only 1 bar was open... luckily it is one of my favourites, and they had some Live Music - a funky jazz band who were belting out some tunes... perfect for the evening. We were even greeted warmly by the bar staff who hadn't seen anyone else in Christmassy get-up, and gave us free drinks as we were wearing our Santa hats :o)

All in all, a productive day, which sadly didn't finish till 3am... work on boxing day at noon was a bit of a struggle, and pulling an 11 hour shift wasn't the most welcome of Christmas presents from my bar, but what can you do.

Trust you all had great Christmases with friends/family and ate more than is possibly necessary. About to have some friends over for a British Christmas Dinner, so getting the best of both worlds this year!

Take care + live life with a smile :o)

MERRRRRRRRRRRRRRY CHRISTMAS...

Hello people!

Thought I should take this opportunity to say MERRY CHRISTMAS to you all! I hope you all have a well-earned break from work, some great food & drinks, relax with friends, and get a chance to reunite with the family to spend some good-honest Christmassy fun together!! I hear it is a wee bit nippy back in the UK, hot & steamy in Borneo, and a variety of other climates depending on where you are reading this from!!

Sadly this year I am away from my family, and I will miss them very much. I'd like to say thank you to all my family for being so supportive and understanding through the last year's adventures - your support from home has meant a huge amount to me, and it would've been a lot harder without all of you. I will of course be there in my mind, if not in body to eat all the left over potatoes ;o)

This year I shall be spending a Christmas with new friends I have made in Australia, down on the beach in St Kilda. We're planning a BBQ, for which I now have purchased Kangaroo steaks, sausages, prawns and chicken... oh and some crunchy-water-type-salad stuff! It's forecast to be sunny + clear tomorrow which is good news as we've had some full on storms recently. The plan is to hit the beach before lunch, have a bit of a BBQ, play some frisbee, and maybe head to another friend's place in the evening for drinks! A very different Christmas, and the first time I will be with people I have only know for a matter of 2 months! Still, I'm looking forward to it, in what has been quite the year of 'firsts'.

Am planning a "looking back on 2007" blog soon, but I think it may take me some time to write, so for now I will leave you with the thoughts of one of my friends from the bar I work in - a gal called El, who is a legend;

"Goodwill to all men... a great concept, but why only at Christmas?!? I think it should be Goodwill to all men & women throughout the year!"

Natural Beauty...

Thought I would share this with you this morning. It has literally just happened, and I think it's a great shame not more people would have seen it. What a sunrise!

Random thoughts for the day...

Ok, well my mind has been milling around a little bit recently (probably as I've had a couple of days off), so I thought I would blog my random recent thoughts... no particular order, and all names & characters are fictious and not based on true persons or events (or so my lawyers told me to say).

So, if you're in another country, far away from home + longing to travel to see the world - why do you spend your whole time getting pissed with other backpackers and not really seeing the country you're in? Working for a minimal paycheck to pay off the backpackers so you can stay for another week, and buy a winebox to get you on your way again...
Hmm... not sure if that's an Oz phenom or true around the world, I guess we weren't well positioned to know in Borneo as we were tee total and hidden in the jungles & kampungs...

Christmas Trees - a pagan tradition I believe, one that was taken on board by the Christians + now such an iconic image of Christmas around the world. They smell the same here in Oz, but have completely different needles - they're long + a bit weird... not like my family's epic 7 foot efforts from Scandinavia! Does anyone know if they're grown here, or imported?

Also, how the hell did we let Coca-Cola control Christmas? Well, at least Santa's costume? Was it the adverts that changed our perception of Santa's clothing, or what?? Wasn't St Nicholas the original figure Santa came from, and if so - wasn't he dressed in Green? Either way, MAJOR marketing coup by the Coke team - I hope whoever came up with that is still getting a royalty cheque!! TAKE IT BACK TO THE OLD SCHOOL I SAY, BRING BACK GREEN! (but then, that just wouldn't be Christmas, would it?!)

Fairy lights... now I know they look pretty, but why are the called fairy lights?

Sushi/Sushi Rolls, how can it be sooooo expensive in England, yet so cheap in Australia (I'm virtually living on it)?? It's great though - fish, rice & vegetables all in a little bite, with a bit of wasabi to spice things up a little. Let me guess it's too good to be true - is Wasabi carcinogenic... isn't everything declared as that these days? I heard recently black pepper is... well that's me screwed.

I have missed places before + wanted to go back - Africa being a prime example - but I've never thought "do you know what, I'd love to live there"... I may just be making a return in 2008 if I can find myself a job. Believe me, it's not just Raleigh blues, but I really miss the culture + people of Asia :o(

Kangaroo's can change their reproductive cycles, slowing things down by up to 18 months, speeding along a pregnancy, or even aborting a birth... how the hell did that come about? And why are they not found in any other continents?!? Surely if they're suited to the plains of Australia, they'd also thrive on some of the plains in Africa?

Apparently as I'm an Aries, I display certain common character traits with other members of my Sign. How? Why? Does this mean that the day + year I was born have determined my character because of the position of the planets? How can that be so?

Blogging in itself seems a weird phenomenon... I have no idea who is reading this, whether they like it, hate it, agree or disagree, yet I believe most of the people who read this are my friends and family! This whole virtual world has so many potentials - keeping in touch with 100's of people, but isn't it just giving us a very basic richness of relationships? Is it better to be "friends" (in facebook terms) with 350 people whom you know on a very limited level... or get to know 20 people through & through and have a highly rich personal relationship? You see, I would be tempted to say the latter... but I hate to lost touch with the other 320 people.... argh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also I commented to a friend the other day about how technology was destroying various of our skills, like handwriting. Have you seen people's handwriting recently - people not much younger than myself who have always grown up with computers (not like us BBC computers at the age of 12 hardcore elite!)?? It's horrific, it often looks as if they haven't ever learnt to write properly. And then it occurred to me that they probably hadn't... on setting off on a rant about this, it also then occurred to me ~ 'why does it matter?'. These people and following generations aren't going to need to handwrite anything, as everything will be computerised! Scary thought, but realistic - novel for me!!

Graffiti seems to be everywhere in and around Melbourne - mainly on walls along the railway lines like in and around London. However they seem to have gone much bigger, bolder + more colourful, and it doesn't seem to be frowned upon in the same way as it doesn't enter onto the streets in quite such a base form of the 'tag'... I wonder whether it's more accepted, whether the walls are legalised + thus people can express themselves more freely, or whether it's because the sun is shining and people are more into their colour?

Finally, Fastfood. Why? 'It fulfills a need' I hear you cry... well, come on. If the likes of Nandos can do so well, and Sushi can be 'on tap' like it is over here, how can there ever be a need for the likes of McDonalds? Oh my god, it's horrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why would you do that to your body?! Go watch "Supersize Me" and come back and talk to me. Don't do it. Opt out. Just Say No.

Right, enough is enough. I bid ye all a merry Tuesday, I am now ticking on into Wednesday and have to go slave away at the bar on the beach tomorrow, where it is supposed to be 31oC and overcast.

Living the dream? Well almost... just need to get me that job with the environmental organisation, and then I'm there.

Sleep well!

Who On Earth Cares??

Hello Australia (and the rest of the world too...)

Wanted to spread the message of the Australian Enviro Conservation, and just signed up to the online petition / information source - whoonearthcares.com

There's already 17'000 signed up - and a handy little map which shows people around you who have also signed up.

It's a campaign launched by the Australian Conservation Federation, and another good piece of awareness-raising marketing spread across blogs, websites, direct mail & social networking sites (such as facebook & myspace). Even a handy tool to generate a PDF to send in the post/by email to the local politician...

Link to facebook group

Still on the hunt for any work in the enviro sector, so if anyone has any good ideas, please let me know!

p.s. My parents got me this cool new T-shirt - my favourite brand!!! (Life is Good)

Memories from Danum

Hey all,

I have been told be a couple of people that there has been a special report by the BBC linked to the Indonesian Climate Change Conference (happening as I type), from none other than Danum Valley Conservation Area.

As you will all doubtlessly know, it was Danum Valley where I spent my first 3 months in Borneo building the infamous bridge, and that place has really got under my skin (no jokes about parasites please). I probably think about it every day in fact, despite being in Australia which is also an amazing place. However my time in the jungle will always be special to me, and I intend to get back there someday in a non-tourist capacity, and hope to help the cause to save the rainforest.

Anyway, in case you are interested, here is the link to the special report from Danum, which is a bit lightweight but builds awareness so is fine by me. Glenn Reynolds is featured in it, who was the guy who gave our teams talks on Danum, its importance, botany and other such things. He's a great guy, and I have a huge amount of respect for him for what he's doing out there.

So, all in all just wanted to reiterate the rallying call to help raise awareness of climate change, and to try to do your own little bit to reduce consumption and lead slightly more sustainable lives.

Take it easy + if you ever get the chance - GO TO THE JUNGLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Moving in...

Morning all,

Well I'm now settling into my new flat on my first morning here. Just in case any of you are interested, my facebook album shows the full story, but for the moment I give you the image of our lounge - quite nice really. Comfortable, and inclusive of the biggest TV I've ever seen :o)

It's so nice to be out of backpackers lodges, and back into a little flat. It's great to have a kitchen again, and my own space - and at the same cost as a week in a backpackers (if not a little less).

I feel bad, but I was getting somewhat bored of hearing the same 19 y/o's story about how they'd been down the East Coast of Australia, got boozed virtually every night, and were really skint (but probably gonna go out again tonight...) Picking up some office work, but didn't really want to do any work, running up a huge debt on their credit card, but "f%^k it"...

I'm not claiming to be a better person or anything like that - everyone goes through their own little journey, and I'm sure it will provide them with many positives in life, but I was getting bored of hearing the same story over & over, then disappearing back to a dorm where people would come in pissed at 4am making loads of noise... I imagine most people can understand that.

So anyway, I'm now living with a nice Aussie gal called Steph - we seem to get on quite well, she's quite well travelled so we've been to a few of the same places. She works in childcare so holds down a regular 9-5, so should see her when I'm not working in the bar. Seems quite relaxed, not too over-strict on anything, so that's cool.

Right, enough rambles.

(there's a post a after my bridge one which imported after it for some reason, so that's new too!)
